Custom Field: Select type field always defaulting to first option - should instead be "please select"
PlannedWhen I create a custom field of "select" type and add several choices I noticed that when filling out a form (contact, deal, company, etc) the first option is already pre-selected for me... it really should be empty by default.
The reason I think it needs to be empty by default is that if I make a field required, I am implying that I need my sales rep to answer a question by selecting one of the options. If its already defaulting to the first option then its very easy for my sales rep to add new record and simply save it.. .the required field validation will not be triggered because technically there is a value in that required field. However, I want the save to be prevented until the user has been forced to explicitly make a choice from that select control.
I already made another suggestion that would help out with this same concept which is to simply let us declare a default value for custom fields... and if that default value is left empty then that will be the default and if that field is marked as required it would alert the user when they try to save the form that they still need to fill out that field!

Now it's 3 years later, but still sort of the same problem.
There is no point in having the field mandatory when it automatically selects the first option when it is mandatory. We are using one field to determine language of the customer, so it is mandatory. But since the system pre-select Danish, it will not give a warning if they do not change it.
I created a work around so that an Activity is created if the language is the default one, but it would be really nice to get this fixed.
