The Agent action lets you run a Background Agent (built-in AI Studio) as a step inside your Smart Flow. This means your flow can hand off data to an agent, let it do its configured task, and then use whatever it returns in the steps that follow.

How to configure the Agent action
- While setting up a Smart Flow, select the Agent action.
- In the Agent action's configuration panel, choose the Agent you want this step to run.
- Only published agents available to your workspace will appear in this list.
Note: If the agent selected in this step is later deleted, turned off, or becomes unavailable, this step will show as having an invalid configuration, and you'll need to update it before the flow can run correctly.
-
If the agent you selected needs input information to do its job, those inputs appear under Agent Inputs. For each input, you can supply a value from:
- A Smart Flow variable
- A field on a record
- The output of an earlier step in the flow
- A static, manually entered value (where supported)
Note: Any input marked as required by the agent must have a value mapped before you can publish the flow. Optional inputs can be left unmapped.
-
Once the agent finishes running, its results are available as output variables that later steps in your flow can use - just like the outputs of any other Smart Flow step.
-
Every Agent action provides:
- Response – the agent's main text output, available as
{{Agent.response}}. - Status – whether the agent run succeeded or failed.
- Response – the agent's main text output, available as
-
- To use these in another step, look for the {} icon on any field that supports variables, click it, find this action under your flow's variables, and select the output you want to insert.
Handle Errors with a Fault Path
The Agent action has one normal output path, which continues after the agent finishes successfully. You can also configure a Fault Path, which the flow follows if the agent run doesn't complete successfully — for example, if the agent fails, times out, or a required input couldn't be resolved.
If you don't configure a Fault Path and the agent run fails, the flow will stop at this step, and the reason will be visible in the flow's execution log.
Practical Example
A background agent that helps you do company research based on the company name and website. It will add the note to the company's timeline with the results so that your team don't have to manually go through the website or Google the company's background.
